The Luring of the Salmon at Gitanmaax
Neil J. Sterritt - 1977
Long ago a princess gave birth to three puppies
and was forced to leave the village in shame. She found a
suitable camp site for her strange family, but had neither
fish traps nor nets to catch the salmon. By lighting flaming
birch bark torches at night she was able to lure the salmon
to within spearing distance.
Eventually two of the puppies took on human
form, the third helped in tracking game, and the family flourished.
Others joined them and thus the village of Gitanmaax was established
- the name referring to the method of luring the salmon.
